How to Understand Body Language

Objective: Learn the basics of body language and how to interpret it to gauge someone’s feelings and reactions.

What is Body Language?

Body language refers to the non-verbal signals we send through posture, facial expressions, gestures, eye contact, and even physical proximity. It can tell you a lot about how someone is feeling, even when their words might suggest something different.

Key Body Language Signals to Look For:

  1. Facial Expressions:
    1. Smiling: A genuine smile often indicates happiness, warmth, and openness. Look for “crow’s feet” at the corners of the eyes for authenticity.
    1. Eye Contact: Steady eye contact usually shows interest and attentiveness. However, too much can feel intimidating, while too little might indicate discomfort or disinterest.
    1. Raised Eyebrows: Raised eyebrows can signal surprise, interest, or curiosity.
  2. Posture:
    1. Open Posture: When someone faces you with their chest and body open, it shows engagement and openness. It suggests they’re comfortable and want to connect.
    1. Closed Posture: Crossing arms or legs can indicate defensiveness, discomfort, or a lack of openness. It’s important to recognize the context, as people may do this when they’re cold or need personal space.
  3. Gestures:
    1. Mirroring: When someone mimics your movements or speech patterns, it’s a sign of connection and rapport. This happens unconsciously and is often a sign that the person feels comfortable.
    1. Fidgeting: Twisting hair, tapping fingers, or other restless gestures can indicate nervousness, discomfort, or impatience.
  4. Physical Distance (Proxemics):
    1. Comfortable Proximity: People who are comfortable with you will generally sit or stand closer, within the “personal space” range of about 1-4 feet.
    1. Increased Distance: If someone steps back or creates distance between you, they may be feeling uncomfortable or trying to create more personal space.
